I never really played FFXI ... I gave XIV a try the other night because my better half is in love with the game but I have a few grievances.

1) I can't jump!?!?!?! You mean to tell me that this two foot ledge is so detrimental to my health that I can't jump down/up and instead I need to spend thirty seconds running around it?
2) Why are you making me run five minutes to one spot, only to spend two minutes to do a single quest and then turn and run five minutes back to that spot? Ugh?
3) Maybe this is just me but does the mouse control in this game really operate that poorly? :( Makes me wonder if its being designed for a controller with the mouse as a second thought since usually a mouse is much quicker/more accurate. Boo.

I will give the game the point that it is gorgeous. Too bad I've spent more time in cut scenes or running from point a to point b than playing. I'm not anticipating adding this to my gaming rotation. :/ I can't figure out if all these simple things (i.e., jumping) I've just taken for granted in other games or if this is actually part of the allure of games like this. It's almost an antithesis of WoW and I'm beginning to think that's part of the appeal.

This week, I wrote an article about the "emerging gamer adult" (http://digitalhippos.com/gaming-articles/46-gaming-buzz/254-the-emerging-gamer-adult), which was inspired by a New York Times article I read last week. I hope to turn this into a series of articles that profile the way adult gamers are integrating the past time into their lives and livelihoods.

Also, while I'm plugging, I was on a Destructoid community podcast a couple of weeks ago. I did it again this week, but it hasn't gone live yet. However, if you feel the need to listen to my soothing, seductive voice, you can check out the first episode I was on here (http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/DtoidCommunicast/communicast-episode-3-muddbstrd-analoge-manic-maverick-and-lenigod-edition-182011.phtml).
Loving the multiple path RP missions. Took my loyalist gunslinger through one and "interrogated" the resistance leader in the end by breaking his hand for information. xD (Then afterwards, since my loyalist has a vendetta against the resistance, I broke his other hand. )

Even though a lot of the choices within the path I have chosen (fame and glory) seem to lead in the same direction, anyway, I still really like it and it makes it feel like I've got a little more control over my character's ongoing story. ^.^

Handy tip for the badge hunters out there:

I jumped off of Nova Praetoria and headed south to the little peninsula at top speed (Ninja Run ftw ^.^) I made it through the DoT barrier and onto the beach and then as I was running to the trees I got teleported back into the water with a new badge. ^.^

I found another badge when exploring the little "Stair" doors at the base of a lot of the Praetorian buildings. Popped up to the roof of the PPD station and there is a badge on the roof.

Another is on one of the ledges of the tower. I used the (veteran?) Jump Pack to get up there as a lowbie.

You can now explore the Enterprise and Train to Fly an Original Series Shuttle Craft in the newly released fan game for PC, created by game studio, Gambit Realm!

Released on the 23rd of August, “Shuttle Flight Training” is the first demo of a freeware product being developed by Gambit Realm, which aims to faithfully recreate the Original Series Enterprise in authentic details using original blueprints as their guidelines – at least that is what developer Paul Weston tells us on the official website for the project!

Quote

We wanted every room, every deck, and all the cool control panels, medical beds, phasers, dilithium crystals and antimatter storage pods we could get.

We wanted all the turbolifts and no load time between locations and we wanted to hop in the shuttle and fly by the ship…

The game is being built on the Torque 3D engine which the developers hope will allow them to fufill their vision and we have to say, that after playing the demo, we are tentativly impressed. The demo includes two locations on the 1701 Enterprise, its Bridge and the main shuttle bay.

Both locations seem to have been re-created very accuratly (though perhaps we would have to get James Cawley to have a play to verify that) and the graphics quality was very high, even on our laptop.

Modelling and Environmental quality seems to have been prioritised right now, over, for example, player animations which we assume will come down the line, however considering that this is a demo, there are several very cool features you can try out, such as flying the shuttlecraft through several training missions (including Maneuvering and Combat). The controls take a little getting used too, and we assume that they are a work in progress also, but everything we have seen so far is very impressive – you even get a crew that loads up and wander around, including representations of Kirk, Spock, Uhura (hubba hubba), Sulu, Chekov, Scotty and probably a few that we are forgetting!

In addition, the developers have included a LAN capability, meaning that those of you on a Local Area Network, can install the server software and fly combat missions against other members of your network! This functionality suggest that WAN (Internet) play will be available down the line, perhaps in another version!

All things considered, this is another impressive Star Trek Fan Game to add to your watch list and it is already much further along than some of the other Fan Game projects out there which gives them some extra points in our books!

We are working to line up an interview with the games developers very soon, so if you have any questions you would like to ask, please leave them in the comments thread for this article and we will be sure to ask them!

Until then, download the demo at the games official website, http://gambitrealm.com/index.php?ID=4&Lang=En

There's something about that paragraph that I really don't like. I'm far too tired to post the reply required to make my point clear but I will say this.

You know what? I get what you're saying. I didn't realize that I would come across the way I did, and I apologize to those of you whom I rubbed the wrong way.

I didn't mean to imply that our being gay is the reason many of us are unhappy with the game, and I didn't mean to dismiss the valid concerns people have over Cryptic's slow response to existing bugs. I guess the point I really wanted to make (but got diverted by my interest in how our experience of life as glbtq people is different from those who have the luxury of never thinking about such things) was that many people here seem to be convinced of the worst regarding this new game stealing resources from STO. We don't know yet if that will happen.

I'm willing to give them the benefit of a doubt. For now. And if you guys are right, and Cryptic abandons us, I'll be right next to you with my cleverly worded sign--and possibly a flaming torch--as we march on their headquarters. (Well, it makes for a fun image anyway.)

Knowing that we will eventually have the ability to create our own playable missions in-game, what missions would you like to see?

I know such a mission wouldn't be possible with user-generated-content tools, but I think it would be awesome to have a Mirror Universe story where you and your BOs go up against your evil, goateed counterparts, in their own evil, goateed version of your starship, with powers and capabilities comparable to your own. That would rock sooo hard.

Tightly controlled individuality, then. :-) Ten percent less chaotic than the leading brand. Maybe they learned that a small amount of chaos was actually necessary to reach their goal of order/perfection. Much like a small amount of black tint is needed to make white paint, if you're a fan of Ralph (not Harlan) Ellison's Invisible Man .

Sorry, don't know this Korok chappie. Personally I don't care about the collective, but about game play. If it's fun, then I'm happy to accept whatever MacGuffin they come up with to let me assimilate NPCs and turn them into my Borg slave army. Mwahahahahaha!

I know, radical thought: wanting a game to be fun. Sorry, I was forgetting for a moment that it's all about the grinding and making it to VA as quickly as possible.

OK, so there was a pretty strong sentiment that the Borg shouldn't be a playable faction in-game. So my question to you is: what races would be distinct enough for you to be interested in playing them?

It seems to me that Klingons are different enough from Feds because they have little scientific or diplomatic interest, it's all about battles, and just a generally different outlook on the galaxy. I could even see that Romulans, if done well, would be different from Klingons, maybe using stealth, subterfuge and general sneakiness to try to meet their goals.

But are Cardassians different enough from Klingons and Romulans to make them a viable candidate for playable faction? What would make them (or another race) interesting enough for someone who has already got a top-level Fed and Klingon to come back to the game and play?

One difference that might work is if a new race used completely different technology, unavailable to the established races. Not necessarily better, but different. Another would be if their goals were different from the usual (but then how do you incorporate that into the game?).

Cardassians, Kazon, Hirogen, Suliban, Imperials, they all seem like shades of Klingon gray to me. So what would make them appeal to you as a gamer?

Unfortunately not, many countries still have death penalties for homosexuals. For those that only give prison sentences, those prison sentences are death penalties of them selves, either from the inhospitable living conditions or the gang violence that usually targets homosexual prisoners. In countries like Iraq and Afghanistan, that are currently occupied largely by US forces, homosexuals are being killed at an alarming rate by their families and factions of the militia. An organization called, Iragi LGBT, http://iraqilgbt.org.uk, operates out of the UK and runs a railroad for targeted people, helping them leave the country and receive asylum in other countries. In the last three years, 700 glbt people have been murder in Iraq alone. Several times, their railroads have been compromised and the English and Americans that operate them have been killed as well.

The GLBT community must remember that the fight for equality does not end at our countries borders. We must help those who can not help themselves.

As you can see, this is something I'm very passionate about.

Windows 7 runs like a dream. Additionally, I should add that I actually thought Vista was a decent OS. Most of the problems people had with it were that they were running them on computers that had no business running it. Vista, especially with the default graphics turned on, required a pretty decent machine. The fault though was Microsoft's for trying to tell everyone to upgrade when that wasn't a good idea.

It's actually pretty similar to what's currently going on with iOS4 and iPhone3G's. Apple has promised that iOS4 runs great on a 3G, but my experience (and that of a lot of other 3G users) is that it severely cripples the phone.

Anyway, your reasons for wanting a Mac are valid ones. If you prefer the feel and logic of the OS, go for it. However, if your issues are simply performance-related, a new computer running Windows 7 will easily do the trick.

"Originally slated to be released before the end of the year in time for the holidays, Valve instead opted to delay the game, citing reasons such as, 'making games is hard' as well as continuing their tradition of releasing games when they're finished as opposed to rushing them out the door."

In EVE I'm Valkriss, a miner and occasional ship builder. I can't recall the system I've been operating in...it's a few jumps from Lustravik...hmmm.

Pretty cool! Do you have any drawings of what the completed ship will look like?

I particularly like the red rope light effect, and the light fixture with the wire frame over it. Very space-shippy.

If I'm not being intrusive, what do you do with the ship when you're done? Is it your wo-man cave? Just a fun place to chill? Do you do any RL role playing? Or do you just like to be in it? Or is the journey what's important, and once you're done you'll start on the next one?

My personal geek-out on the same level is: I would absolutely LOVE to have a full size TARDIS police box in my garden. One with a remote control, so I could turn on the window lights, and make the top lantern flash and maybe even do sound effects. Oh, it would make me ridiculously happy, just seeing it out there each day. I hear that someone in a co-worker's neighborhood (NW of Denver) has one, but I haven't gone looking for it yet.

Good luck with your project! Keep us posted on the progress.

I built a 1" = 1' rough scale model out of posterboard, just to work out the dimensions and angles. Other then that and a few sketches there are no real plans. I have in my head a fair idea of what I want it to look like, and I just work out the details as I go along. Mostly I just start fitting things together and see what develops.

Some things happen because I find some cool shape or item and then figure out a way to include it. Example; I was planning on putting in some kind of warp core/reactor blinking light thing. In the old ship, I had a plastic tube with holes drilled in it, that I filled with red blinking lights from Radio Shack. I was going to use that in the new ship, but I was out shopping this afternoon, and on a whim stopped at Spencer's gifts, where I found a funky LED disco light. Now I'll just have to work it into the box where the tube fit, but I can't say exactly what it'll look like when its done.

It's kind of fun browsing through stores, just looking at the shape of a thing, imagining it painted silver, with a blinking light in it, or an old Star Trek sticker on it, or what ever. At home depot I found these things that are used to provide a ventilating gap under attic insulation. They're molded plastic with a kind of "X" truss work design. I bought a few, ($1.80 @), don't know what they'll become yet.

When its done? You're pretty much on target with "wo-man cave" It's just a fun place to hide out and loose my self in the various online worlds I explore. It's a 2 seater so my Sweety can join me from time to time. (She likes word games, computer sudoko, and majong) And the back half of the ship, the Captains Quarters, will be a usable guest room.

If we ever have an actual guest, they better be a sci fi fan.

I played it with my ex, but got turned off when I saw that the game has a rather fatal flaw. He kept playing words he didn't actually know the meaning of, because there is no penalty for submitting a nonexistant word. You can just keep putting random letters down and hitting submit until one works.

Penny Arcade actually had a really funny comic about it.
